Christmas in Wellington is surely a grand sight to behold, with the Wellington Santa Parade as the first major event in the countdown to Christmas. This parade has been going since 1949!

The Wellington Underground Market is another sight to behold during the festive season, with the stalls opening additionally on Sundays leading up to Christmas day. (Usually only open Saturday) It's jam packed with unique items for sale, perfect as gifts for loved ones or even yourself.

Other events include the 'Official lighting of the Courtenay Place Christmas Tree' which is done early December and the annual 'Carols by Candlelight' event held in mid December. Pop-up Carols and Summer City performances are also common sights around the city through the festive season.

Townsville is home to the Stable on Strand, a 5-day-long festival entirely dedicated to celebrating the joy of Christmas. Free for everyone, this event is one of the largest highlights of the Townsville calendar. It features local artists, markets (for wonderful gift ideas!) live performances from guest stars, carousel rides, food stalls and free tea, coffee and christmas cake for everyone!

The Nativity story recreations really come alive, played by live actors, in the Town of Bethlehem where there is plenty on display to see and do for the entire family! Or why not pop over to the Stable Village where there many food stalls tempt you, as well as local clubs, sponsors and the Festival space for Face Painting, Christmas Art Studio and much more!

If there's you thing to do in Townsville this Christmas, it's visit the Stables. With all of the lights, colour and music, you're in for a real festive treat.

From humble beginnings in 2003, the 'Burstow's Christmas Wonderland' light display started as an event aiming to bring the whole community together to experience the joy and excitement of Christmas. Growing in size over the years, Toowoomba's Christmas Wonderland is now an annual staple for many people in the area. Filled with tens of thousands of lights and illuminated figures of trees, reindeer, Santa, snowmen and much much more!

The spectacle runs for around twenty nights throughout the month of December and is held each year at the Botanical Gardens, Queens Park from 7pm - 10pm. With live entertainment throughout the duration of the festival, an enormous christmas lights display, as well as BBQs running every night and free ice creams for children, it's always worth coming back for another peek!

Entry to the festival each year costs a gold coin donation and the funds raised from the festival go to numerous charitable organisations such as Lifeline Darling Downs, Toowoomba Hospital Foundation and Toowoomba Hospice.

It's worthy Christmas festival for a worthy cause, and with a myriad of hotels, restaurants, gardens, and tourist activities, perhaps picturesque Toowoomba would be worth some consideration for a weekend getaway during the festive season. Come join the celebrations!

Each year, Rockhampton puts on the impressive Annual Christmas Parade during the month of November. The Cancer Council Queensland together with Stockland Rockhampton present the parade which draws both local and regional crowds. Featuring Christmas-themed floats decked out in christmas lights and other goodies along with an array of activities, it's a fun day for a good cause!

The Carols by Candlelight (featuring Santa) Christmas event is another big one on the social calendar with not only one but TWO concerts starting from 2015. The shows will feature live entertainment from local and guest talents and and all money raised from tickets will be going to a nominated charity each year.

Finally there is the Rockhampton Christmas lights competition held each year. Get your fix of all things illumination with fairy lights, inflatable displays, hand-made scenes and much more as the locals turn their front yards into wonderlands! Maps for the season can be downloaded from 'The MorningBulletin's' website when they have been finalised and released.

Christmas Lights – Hunter Valley Gardens
There is a magical Christmas lights display at the Hunter Valley Gardens which has been touted as the largest light display in the southern hemisphere. This event runs from November to early January and features over 1.5million lights with accompanying festive music.

Christmas Carols – Newcastle Carols in the Park
Held in early December at Braddeley Park, come sing with an array of local entertainers and special guests or shop at the market stalls before finishing off the evening with an impressive fireworks display.

Christmas Carols – Newcastle Herald Carols by Candlelight
A popular annual tradition at the stunning King Edward Park, and a favourite with many Newcastle dwellers. With guest entertainers, local artists, carnival rides, and of course a visit from Santa himself!

Run with Santa!
Come join all of the other Santas and participate in the annual Newcastle Variety Santa Fun Run. (You could also go as a Reindeer, elf or Mrs Claus!) Starting at the foreshore and finishing at Harbour Square, Honeysuckle. This run supports Variety, The Children's Charity. Gear up for a 3km or 5km run of your choosing and run for a good cause this festive season!

Ride with Santa!
If running isn't your thing, why not ride instead? (Motorcycles that is!) The Newcastle Toy Run boasts over 3500 motorcycle riders who will be cruising the 25km route from Stockton to the Newcastle Foreshore, carrying presents for families and children in need. If you don't ride yourself you can support them from the roadside with masses showing up to view the spectacle each year.

The Moreton Bay region is also no stranger to putting on impressive Christmas lights displays, with areas such as Caboolture, Morayfield, Deception Bay, Petrie and Warner putting on particularly grand efforts in numbers alone. Get your illumination fix with the locals!

The area also hosts a number of events for the Christmas season:

Strathpine for 'Christmas in the park'

Hosted in Pine Rivers Park, this event boasts live entertainment, carols, fireworks and a visit from Santa himself!

Scarborough for 'Christmas by the sea'

Hosted at Scarborough Beach Park, this event has tonnes of things to see and do, including rides, the lighting of the Christmas tree, live entertainment (including Santa on stage) street parade and fireworks.

Caboolture for 'Christmas under the stars'

Hosted in Caboolture Town Square, this event has everything for a family night out! Rides, Christmas markets (great for unique gift ideas), live entertainment and performances, carols, fireworks and an appearance from Santa.

Local shopping centres also showcase decorated malls, visits from Santa, decorations and store-based sales to promote the Christmas season including Morayfield Shopping Centre, Bribie Island Shopping Centre and Westfield North Lakes.

For it's size, Mackay has continued to boast an impressive participation in the city's annual Christmas regional lights competition. Get your illumination fix with tours available for viewing the lights during the festive season, these are a brilliant idea for work parties and social get-togethers.

While there's absolutely zero chance of snow in these parts (even a cool day is a hard ask at the Christmas time of year!) that doesn't stop the Mackay locals from attending the annual Carols by candlelight. With Sarina's twilight markets for all those last minute christmas gifts starting at 3pm and the Christmas carols kicking off at around 5.30pm, there's plenty to see and do with the family if you live in or are visiting the beautiful beach area for the festive season.

The Christmas Twilight Parade is another of the annual highlights, boasting impressive floats decorated to the hilt in lights, glowing lanterns and Christmas characters. 'A Star is Born' an annual singing competition and show is also presented at the main stage in d'Arcy Doyle Place.

Everyone is welcome to participate in the yard lighting competitions and displays as well as the parade! Over the years we've seen people dress up as their favourite Elf, reindeer, penguin or snowman, whatever best expresses the joy and fun of Christmas in Ipswich. Also, don't forget to bring your lanterns/light to light the way for Santa!

In 2015 over the street became a stage for 55 colourful entries from schools, clubs, businesses, churches, cultural groups and local communities. It's a cherished event on the Hobart calendar and a draw-card for tourism during the Christmas period.

Not to be outdone, the city and surrounding suburbs are also home to an array of Christmas light displays each year as the locals don their houses and businesses with fairy lights, rope lights, inflatables, large and small hand-made displays, Santa visits and much much more!

Finally there is the city's Carols by Candlelight event. Chocked full of traditional carols and your favourite Christmas songs. Held during the middle of December in the stunning St. David Park, it contains live performances by local talent and guest stars, including Santa Claus himself!

The Christchurch Christmas Festival is one of the city's highlight events with assorted street markets, a Christmas craft fair, an Advent Fayre selling cakes and bric-a-brac, live entertainment and a Father Christmas Procession. At 6pm is the switching on of all the christmas lights with the city mayor and special guests!

Another big crowd-drawer is the privately-run Christchurch Christmas Lightshow located on 650 Shands Road. What started as a small collection of fairy lights has blown up into a synchronised sound and lights display to rival all others! They have everything to make your evening including over 300,000 fairy lights, large illumination pieces, inflatables, animated figures, and christmas scenes large and small... all synchronised wonderfully to music. It's truly a sight to behold each festive season!

With good reason too! With enjoying a Christmas on the golden beaches of North Queensland, it's a holiday even Santa himself would be jealous of.

Cairns' annual Carols by Candlelight is a wonderful event with a wonderful cause, so bring a blanket and your best singing voices! (Song books available on the night.) There is also food, beverages, candles and glow stick products available for purchase to add to the ambience of the evening too. All proceeds go towards distributing food hampers to hundreds of local families in need. The festivities conclude with a fireworks display at approximately 8:30pm.

Locals also work up a storm each season putting up impressive christmas light displays for the annual Christmas light displays. Filled with fairy lights, rope lights, inflatables, hand-crafted decorations and christmas joy for everyone! Entries are announced on the Cairns Post official website once they have been finalised for the season, where not just the city but the suburbs come alive with lights and colour!

Auckland is based around two large harbours and is the largest and most populous urban area in the country. This makes it the perfect place to celebrate Christmas in New Zealand!

Christmas at the Zoo

Auckland Zoo becomes home to more than just animals during the festive season! With roving entertainers, carolling elves, face painting and the famous Singing Santa show. This event is held early December each year for one day only.

Christmas Parades

Occurring at the start of the Christmas season, Farmers Santa Parade down Queens Street in the CBD.(Depending on weather this alternates from late November to early December.) With a mass of live marching bands, balloons, and much more it's a festive spectacle for the whole family. Don't forget 'Santa's Party' event afterwards!

A huge event held every year on Auckland Domain and free for everyone to attend! Grab your friends and family for a wonderful evening of christmas lights, entertainment and fireworks.

Auckland Fair

Just perfect for doing some Christmas gift shopping! The Auckland Fair has some 135 independent craftspeople selling unique and special products direct to the public for one day only. Wares for sale include ceramics, art, prints, candles, cosmetics, clothing, kids' clothes, furniture, soaps, bags, jewellery, accessories, cushions, homewares and so much more!
